Hey Cheryl,
I’m wondering what your opinion is on the impact of groups like Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth actually have in influencing Environment policy within the UK and possibly Brussels? I noticed in the news about the roof top invasion on the Houses of Parliament but other than the Sunday it happened I’ve heard nothing since! Do you think publicity stunts like this work?
Steve
Hi Steve,
Apologies for just seeing this now —
As they say there’s no such thing as bad press. Certainly there is no other effective way to initiate interest in a campaign like the stunt pulled by Plane Stupid on the roof of the Houses of Parliament, however, I fear sometimes more provocative campaigning lacks substance. It becomes more about shock and reactive policy suggestions, which make these groups susceptible to a brush-off from politicians.
So I suppose they are effective but that effectiveness is short-lived if not backed up by reasoned debate rather than vague mantras and unreasonable policy demands.
Regards -
Cheryl
